2024 Zurich Diamond League preview: Full schedule & how to watch Sha'Carri Richardson, Mondo Duplantis and Karsten Warholm live (2024)

The Zurich Diamond League marks the last opportunity for athletes to earn points and secure qualification for the 2024 Diamond League Final.

The action begins on 4 September with the women’s pole vault at the Zurich Main Station, and a much-anticipated exhibition 100m race between astounding pole vaulter Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis and the fastest 400m hurdler of all-time Karsten Warholm - both Olympic champions and world record holders.

Several Olympic champions from Paris 2024 will compete at the Weltklasse Zurich on 5 September, including Kenya's double long-distance Olympic gold medallist Beatrice Chebet in the women's 5,000m, while Sha'Carri Richardson and Julien Alfred will meet for the first time since the women's Olympic 100m final.

Read on to find out the key information for the penultimate Diamond League meeting on 4 and 5 September.

When and where is the Weltklasse, Zurich Diamond League?

The first event of the meeting will be the women’s pole vault at 5:30pm on 4 September at Zurich Main Station.

The rest of the event will take place on 5 September at the near century-old Letzigrund Stadium Zurich, with a regular capacity of 30,000.

Diamond League action in the stadium begins at 7:30pm on Thursday with the men’s shot put at 7:20pm.

World records at stake as the fastest and the best athletes meet in Zurich

After taking two gold medals home from the Olympics, Chebet wants more world records to go with her 10,000m and 5km road marks.

She wants to beat Gudaf Tsegay’s 5000m time set in Eugene, Oregon last year. The mark of 14:00:21 is nearly six seconds faster than Chebet's personal best from the 2023 Diamond League Final in Eugene. The Kenyan would love to end her extraordinary year, which began with her third world cross-country title, on a record-breaking note.

The distance supremo can count on Wavelight technology and the strong field to push her on including Freweyni Hailu, the Ethiopian who finished fourth in the 5000m Olympic final.

"My running journey has been a long one and it has been mainly about building up slowly, gradually," she said after winning the 5000m title in Paris.

"I have always told myself I am never in a rush for glory. My target is to always keep winning and breaking them one by one and build on my profile as a long-distance runner."

Another Olympic star tipped to shine in Zurich is Duplantis, who broke his own pole vault world record on 24 August, barely a month after improving it in Paris.

He will warm up for his pet event with an exhibition head-to-head 100m sprint against Warholm at Letzigrund Stadium on Wednesday 4 September – a day before the Diamond League meeting in Zurich.

They will return to the stadium for their usual events on Thursday, with Duplantis leading a loaded field comprising Paris 2024 silver medallist Sam Kendricks. Filipino star EJ Obiena will not compete after ending his season early with a back injury.

Warholm, on the other hand, will be seeking his second men's 400m hurdles win in the Diamond League after returning to winning ways in Silesia. The Norwegian Olympic silver medallist trails Brazilian Alison Dos Santos, the bronze holder from Paris, who leads the event’s Diamond League Qualifying standings.

At Zurich Main Station, a trio of Olympic champions and Paris 2024 podium finishers will reunite a top-class women’s pole vault.

Greece's Aikaterini Stefanidi (Rio 2016), USA's Katie Moon (Tokyo 2021), and Nina Kennedy of Australia (Paris 2024) should draw some loud cheers from the Zurich crowd on Wednesday. Kennedy has won in Zurich before and will look to continue the momentum of her brilliant Olympic form.

All three 1500m men’s Olympic medallists led by American Cole Hocker, will be in action while the fourth-place finisher in Jakob Ingebrigsten will look to put that disappointment behind him with a good performance.
