FAMSF Receives HUGE Art Donation! Kirk Edward Long's Gift & New Acquisitions (2025)

A treasure trove of art is coming to San Francisco, thanks to the generosity of a local collector! Kirk Edward Long has gifted an astonishing 1,600 works to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), a collection so vast it's hard to fathom.

But here's the twist: this isn't just any art donation. Long's collection is a historian's dream, boasting an impressive array of early modern European prints from Italy, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. And that's not all—it also includes paintings, antiquities, and decorative arts, some of which have already found a home at FAMSF.

Among the highlights are a 19th-century masterpiece by Gustave Moreau and a bronze and onyx bust by Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier. These pieces are just a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage Long has shared with the museum.

This extraordinary gift is part of a larger initiative, the "Gifts of Art" campaign, celebrating two significant anniversaries in FAMSF's history. The campaign has already brought 2,000 works by 275 donors into the museum's fold, including paintings by renowned artists like Canaletto, Georgia O'Keeffe, and John Singer Sargent.

But wait, there's more! The collection also features drawings by Elisabeth Louise Vigée‑LeBrun, Mary Cassatt, and Henri Matisse, and contemporary pieces by Ruby Neri and Maria Guzmán Capron, to name a few.

Thomas P. Campbell, FAMSF's director and CEO, eloquently expressed the impact of this campaign: "...the exceptional generosity of donors set on a common goal: to make extraordinary works of art accessible..." But is this gift truly accessible to all?

The campaign has undoubtedly enriched the museum's collection, but it also raises questions about the accessibility of these artworks to the general public. How can museums ensure that these gifts are not just for the privileged few but are enjoyed by a diverse audience?

As we admire the stunning works donated by Long and others, let's also consider the broader implications of such generous acts. Are these gifts a celebration of art for all, or do they inadvertently contribute to exclusivity? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
