Can a hacker access my webcam? ›

Hackers can gain webcam access with malicious software (malware). Many types of malware allow hackers to activate your webcam remotely, compromising your webcam privacy.

Check if the camera indicator light is on

If your webcam indicator light is on or it's acting abnormally (you see a blinking LED) even though you haven't turned the webcam on, it might be a sign that your device is spying on you.

Go to the Privacy & security tab > App permissions. Click Camera or Microphone. Expand the Recent activity menu. Here you'll learn which apps have accessed your camera or microphone in the past 7 days.

While there are several “test your webcam online” sites, they have drawbacks, for one, webcam test sites may have the provision “you may be recorded” bundled in their terms of use. For another, the increased use of the internet does not ensure online security. In fact, it's attracted more malicious actors.

In some cases, your webcam may be running as part of an application you do not know. This usually happens when you download a virus or malware, and it takes over your webcam. To find out if this is the case, try to run your webcam.
