I bought some play doh sets for my toddler, the kind that comes with various molds and a bunch of different colored play doh etc and after the first time my son played with it, my husband told me that he’s “banning” play doh from the house and told me to stop buying play doh because he says it’s too messy to clean up. Even though play doh gets all over the floor, I think it’s worth the clean up because my toddler played independently for like an hour. Also, I don’t want to deprive him from this childhood experience, like everyone grew up with play doh! So I told my husband that I’m not going to stop buying him play doh just because it’s an “inconvenience” to clean up. My husband made a comment about how he can’t clean up after my toddler the same way my mom does (when my mom comes to visit she’s really good about helping us keep our house clean and organized) and then says how he’s just trying to tell me how he feels and then he walks away. So AITA for not “banning” play doh?

What's hard about it? We do play doh. Sometimes I miss pieces after playing and it dries out and it's even easier to sweep up. it's good for hand strength and creativity, so I would advocate for it!

Do you have a little table he can do it at or put a placemat on the counter? Tell him if he wants to play playdoh it has to stay in that area. My son does great with this and it’s easy to clean up. It’s also not my first choice to play with but my son loves it so we get it out every other day or so.

@julia828,
I second this. Mine plays at her little table or on the kitchen counter using her learning tower. Mess is rarely an issue as long as playdough stays in designated areas. No different than sweeping up after her meals.

Sounds like your husband needs to view this as a learning opportunity. If he thinks it’s too messy he can help teach your son HOW to keep it together, how to help clean up, how to take care of his things. Not just BAN playdoh.

Buy some kinetic sand or slime and show him how easy play doh is to clean up compared to that mess I’m kidding. I wouldn’t ban it but like everyone else has said, just make a designated spot for it because it’s so fun for kids this age

No I don't think you're TA. I agree with everyone else that Playdoh isn't particularly messy when toddler is stationary in one spot - I often give to my toddler in his highchair - yes there's still mess but it's contained. If your husband is that worried though - does he have to be the person to clean it up? Why can't you clean it up while hubby takes your son to do something else? Can you set up a toddler table and chairs outside and leave it as an outdoor activity? There are so many solutions where both people can feel heard and like they are having an input into the child's activities here.

What! No way, you’re not TA! Playdoh is so easy to clean. You just take a ball of it and touch it to the pieces that broke off. And it’s so so cheap that if the colors mix it’s really not that big of a deal. I’d stand my ground on that one too if my husband tried to stop it lol

I don’t think play doh is a problem. Apparently he misses your mom. Lol. I wish I had someone to help me clean the house. Haha. Ours stays in the kitchen on the little table. With More practice it will be less messy. Very easy to clean.
