St. Michael’s Episcopal School seeks a qualified full-time middle school (grades 6-8) Spanish teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a 10-month position beginning in August. Candidates should forward a cover letter, resume, and educational philosophy.
The position’s primary responsibilities will be to:
- teach four or five sections of middle school Spanish 1
- embrace and strive to implement the ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning, with an emphasis on spoken, interpretive and presentational (spoken and written) communication skills;
- use, adapt, and create a range of formal and informal formative and summative assessments, including performance-based assessments, in order to develop student communicative competence, provide timely and useful feedback to students, and measure mastery of grammar and vocabulary;
- maintain accurate and timely documentation of grades, behavior, academic concerns, and parent communication;
- actively partner with Middle and Lower School Spanish teachers and the Spanish Curriculum Coordinator in developing curriculum;
- work actively to cultivate an inclusive environment and support a school community grounded in empathy, social responsibility, and an appreciation and respect for individual differences;
- maintain positive relationships with students, parents/caregivers, and colleagues;
- create, plan, and teach an elective course during the school day;
- serve as a middle school student advisor;
- perform professional duties as assigned by the Head of School or Division Director, including but not limited to recess, lunch, and carpool;
- attend and participate in regular department, divisional and all-school faculty meetings;
- actively participate in school life by attending and/or coaching or mentoring extracurricular activities and sports;
- follow personnel policies as described in employee handbooks.
The successful candidate will have:
- excellent verbal and written skills and ability to communicate with students, parents and colleagues;
- experience teaching Spanish (preferably in middle school);
- a bachelor’s degree in education, Spanish, or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred, though not required;
- a passion for supporting middle school students as they grow and learn;
- used a variety of instructional strategies and assessment methods to meet the cognitive and affective needs of all students;
- a commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues;
- introduced students to Spanish-speaking cultures, fostering critical thinking skills, empathy, and a sense of global engagement;
- native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
The ideal candidate will have:
- extensive first-hand knowledge of, and experience in, Spanish-speaking countries or cultures;
- a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching Spanish (preferably in middle school);
- encouraged active engagement through interactive lessons, discussions, and projects;
- mentored middle school-aged students to support their personal and social-emotional growth;
- worked cooperatively with colleagues on a consistent basis;
- integrated technology effectively into student learning;
- demonstrated kindness, enthusiasm, a sense of humor, investment in continued learning and professional growth, and a passion for supporting children as they grow and learn;
- worked actively to cultivate an inclusive environment and support a school community grounded in empathy, social responsibility, and an appreciation and respect for individual differences;
- employed effective classroom management skills;
- maintained accurate and timely documentation of grades, behavior, academic concerns, and parent communication;
- directed/coached school activities/clubs/sports outside of the classroom and participated in school life through co-curricular activities
- demonstrated success in building students’ communicative competence in writing, reading, speaking, listening, and presenting.
