The Week Ahead in Beer: Steel Bender barrel ages a beautiful brew (2024)

Greetings, New Mexico craft beer lovers. Stoutmeister here with The Week Ahead in Beer. This column covers all the breweries in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, with Santa Fe’s eight breweries, one in Los Alamos, one in Moriarty, one in Red River, one in Silver City, and one in Truth or Consequences also joining the party.

Last year, multiple local breweries joined with others across the nation to create their own takes on the Black is Beautiful stout recipe, all while benefiting local charities. Steel Bender told us back then that they were holding some of their batch back to be aged in two Willett Bourbon barrels for six months, and if you saw their social media posts on Tuesday, then you are probably aware that the end result has been canned. Thursday will mark the release of that barrel-aged batch at the brewery, with a portion of the proceeds again going to the New Mexico Black Leadership Council. Patrons will be limited to one case per person, or you can buy individual four-packs for $20. If you would like, might we also suggest lunch? Perhaps with a 10-ounce pour of the original Black is Beautiful on draft? Yeah, we kinda figured you all might be down for that. The taproom will be open at 11:30 a.m., and odds are, you will see me there.

This is far from the only canned release of the week, which is becoming a thing these days. Like we’ve been saying for months now, we all need a bigger beer fridge. Anyway, new this week are not one, but two new canned offerings from Bow & Arrow (yeah, they promised five releases for their fifth anniversary, but a sixth one managed to sneak in there) in Savage Times Sour IPA and Goes Well With Queso Double Hazy IPA, with both becoming available Friday. Bosque brings back Sunshine Stout, now in package for the first time, this Friday. Boxing Bear has another one-two punch with Red Knuckle Irish Red and Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout on Saturday. La Cumbre whispers that it’s time to Lager Softly this Friday. Marble gets in the saison (get it?) with Barbe Rouge, releasing today (Wednesday). (UPDATE) Canteen has gone ahead and canned more Laid Back Lager and Helles Awaits, because eight new canned beers was far too few for a week in 2021.

On the new draft beer front this week, there some fresh options to check out for pints or crowler/growler fills. (UPDATE) Bosque put dessert in a glass with Jaja Horchata. High and Dry added a new lager, I’m Wryting a Novel, and a new fruited ale, Cry in the Sun. La Cumbre also tapped Fan Fiction DIPA and Bluebarb, a blueberry rhubarb ale. La Reforma will tap La Neta DIPA later this week. (UPDATE) Marble brought back an old favorite in Dupy’s Dunkel. (UPDATE) Rio Bravo tapped a new Pale Ale. Sidetrack will have more MX Lager on draft later this week. Sobremesa added La Mesa Negra and (UPDATE) Citrus Wit. (UPDATE) Tractor brings back one of our old favorites, Scotcholate.

Up in Santa Fe, Hidden Mountain has found Mango Lime Saison and Key Lime Occupy Sour. (UPDATE) Santa Fe Brewing has just rolled out cans of Santa Fhazy IPA. Over in Los Alamos, Bathtub Row tried not to giggle with some Dinkel Beer.

Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of February 22.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Instead of “Beers” being an all-encompassing list of seasonal/specialty offerings, we are now splitting everything into “Draft/Crowler/Growler Fills” for beers poured from the taps, and “Cans/Bottles” for pre-packaged beers. All beers listed are subject to change.
